James Gillray - Ian Keable
James Gillray followed William Hogarth as the leading satirist of the 18th century, elevating caricature and shaping the cartoon format we recognise today. Fearless in his portrayals of politicians and royalty, his sharp wit was matched by superb draughtsmanship and a deep love of classical and modern art and literature. He died insane in 1815, like George III whom he often mocked, and his reputation declined in the morally rigid Victorian era. Today, he’s widely regarded as the first, and greatest, political cartoonist, admired by many contemporary artists.
